One on One Workshops Book Now

photograph by Brian Caven in the CARDEN

Photography Workshop

A very personal and private experience

This workshop is designed to help individuals develop better people skills in combination with lighting and/or seeing better light as per subject and location.   I can help you become more assertive and yet open to allowing the essence of your subjects to translate with your point of view.   People, be it journalistic or formal portraiture, can be revealed in a natural way and lighting and all the elements of capturing a subject need to be addressed; from just seeing a person in the world as a journalist, to styling, makeup, location, lighting and allowing an other's character to come through without looking forced.   However photo illustration and conceptual ideas are and can be part of the creative process while doing portraits.   I will help you to gain access with the camera in a thoughtful and hopefully more evocative way.   Each trip is planned around where you want to go and what you need to hone your skills as a portrait photographer.   The workshop will be a one on one experience that provides you with a wealth of information that has you shooting, mingling, and producing photographs for as many days as you like.   I have almost 30 years experience and can share all of it with you from the technical side to intuitive way of thinking.   We can plug into what works for you and open some of the creative tools so you really enjoy the process of photography as a whole.   I can give you tools to help you if our creatively stuck and I can help you become better at seeing and lighting if that is an area you need to expand.    The time spent will be a mix of shooting, discussing the technical information, and being involved with a 24-hour photographic experience.   I will show you how to make your life rewarding through your art.
Where:
You can come to New Mexico for a week or two, travel or I can come to you to explore projects that are relevant in your neck of the woods.   We can do day trips or go on the road.   We could be in roadside motels or in an old airstream that sleeps two.   Camping is an option.   We will design the trip for your needs.
Students will be responsible for their personal accommodations and transportation.
Admission:
A portfolio and personal phone conversation with Karen is required for admission.   This is the year round workshop.   Karen teaches at the Santa Fe Workshops on occasion and can give you a list of references.   If you and a few friends want to line of a small session this can be accommodated. Karen will be teaching at the workshops in Santa Fe for a larger group rate. Please contact them directly.
Tuition:
The tuition is 5000.00 plus travel expenses.   Travel expenses include motel rooms and meals while on the road.   We don't go high end unless you request it.   We go for what is interesting and make the trip an adventure be it day by day or by the week.   If less than a week the tuition is $1000.00 a day.   A week is considered arrival on Sunday depart on Sunday.   Shoot Monday through Friday wrap on Saturday.

Nature’s Masterwork: Cats

Beautifully engineered from the start, cats have merely honed their structure over the past 34 million years. With switchblade claws and acute night vision, “the cat is the perfect hunting machine,” says one expert. Apart from a propensity to pounce on prey, cats’ aloof elegance has long made them the choice for animal companionship.

Meow verses Roar
I recall sitting with my father over dinner discussing how to illustrate the idea of meow verses roar?  We chatted about doing some circus stools or mics by each when I thought in a moments notice...why not use Marshal amps?
Bingo the image was exact as we discussed and this is just the way my brain works, very quick and sharp for solving problems.
Thanks Dad and Mom for years of supporting my creative ways.
Big cats are sweet by dangerous due to size and power in the paws....if you own one at home they can take you down in one fell swoop just playing.
I witnessed this several times while spending about 80 days on this project.
Cats are predators.  They should be left in the wild.
Please sign the petition to stop big cat ownership in domestic environments.

Earth teach me to forget myself as melted snow forgets its life. Earth teach me resignation as the leaves which die in the fall. Earth teach me courage as the tree which stands all alone. Earth teach me regeneration as the seed which rises in the spring.

Never cut a tree down in the wintertime. Never make a negative decision in the low time. Never make your most important decisions when you are in your worst moods. Wait. Be patient. The storm will pass. The spring will come.

The Net

photography by karen kuehn
John Kelly in Hawaii, he made this net as a young man and he was one of the Islands biggest environmental activists, artist and world class surfer.
"When we continually live our life with a safety net
it creates a barrier to our freedom."
- Daily OM
Is Freedom for Some being Caught in the NET ?

As the sun rises and my roosters crow I m up reading client and friend emails online.  News and a few daily spiritual inspiring blogs.
This morning one such blog is called Without a Net and it reminded me of a Steve Jobs quote about trusting in your future and karma.
http://karenkuehn.blogspot.com/2012/03/steve-jobs.html
Some of the freest folks I know are those whom work in the earth and play in the water.
There's something about getting your hands dirty and being in the water that changes ones' perspective about life.
When is the last time you were actually in the ocean, a lake, under a waterfall or swimming in love with your partner?
Spring, now planting new seeds for summer growth, California Poppies, I'm a native, snap dragons, red hot pokers, and yes For Get Me Nots!
I miss living near the ocean.  Traveling for surf expeditions has been my option since my move to New Mexico.
I may one day move back to Northern California or somewhere on a shore break where the weather is warm.
My life is not written in stone but rather open to what feeds it love and growth.
I am in the land with my hands and heart growing things in between making art and a living.
The concrete jungle is hard, makes people harder, unknowing they do it...accept it and make it good.  It has to be good whatever we has humans choose...that is the way we survive. Our minds make it so.  The Holy part of a brain particle that says its so!
Being from both life styles I tend to want to share the cross over with my friends...its like being in heaven a part of my life here in New Mexico, compared to living in a large loft like studio in Manhattan.  That life was amazing but it was "ON" all the time.
Some folks thrive on that edge...I did but I craved nature more.
I love all the things city folks love, the art, the museum's openings, the foods and friendships kindled.
Cities are full of MORE...more love options, more consumers more of the good the bad and the ugly.
I've had my fill and I can see more in my future of both life styles.
Making art is pretty much the passion.
City life is exhilarating and exhausting.Leaving NYC as a photographer became necessary to live my life freely.
The money is not the same nor is my career but my life is rich with other options and freedoms.
I don't live with a voice of  competition and failing but rather living and exploring and I have huge faith in each day.
Ups and downs I'm trusting that the Universe will provide exactly what is suppose to be the life as an artist, mother and friend to many.
Sustainable green living, love, my ties to the cities are strong but not the end all to be all.
Lovely connections.
The internet has made many things possible and it has robbed many from the true texture of life as well.
Walking down the streets of NY, LA and SF you see folks holding phones texting, never lifting their heads.
The technology has absorbed there souls.
Take a break and enjoy nature, leave you phones at home, shut them off and live.
Living through the internet has created a society that touches less.
Are we loosing our human connection ?
Not the live I want to life.  I have the skills and use it all the time to keep a thumb in the pie.
Living more remotely I choose it.
But I choose to be in a physical life as well.
Bless the souls stuck in traffic living under floresant lights.
That old idea of one week or month to live....how would you like to see it so?
Who would you share that last breath with if givin a choice?
Who makes you laugh and expand your mind?
Family, friends and lovers
Whose gonna hold your hand on the way out?
Whose lips will grace yours and make your heart shine?
I know I have my loves, my special places , friends and family.
(the daily OM thoughts shared below)

Without a Net
Living  Life with Trust
- The Daily Om

As we create the life of our dreams, we often reach a crossroads where the choices seem to involve the risk of facing the unknown versus the safety and comfort of all that we have come to trust. We may feel like a tightrope walker, carefully teetering along the narrow path to our goals, sometimes feeling that we are doing so without a net. Knowing we have some backup may help us work up the courage to take those first steps, until we are secure in knowing that we have the skills to work without one. But when we live our lives from a place of balance and trust in the universe, we may not see our source of support, but we can know that it is there.

If we refuse to act only if we can see the safety net, we may be allowing the net to become a trap as it creates a barrier between us and the freedom to pursue our goals. Change is inherent in life, so even what we have learned to trust can surprise us at any moment. Remove fear from the equation and then, without even wondering what is going on below, we can devote our full attention to the dream that awaits us.

We attract support into our lives when we are willing to make those first tentative steps, trusting that the universe will provide exactly what we need. In that process we can decide that whatever comes from our actions is only for our highest and best experience of growth. It may come in the form of a soft landing, an unexpected rescue or an eye-opening experience gleaned only from the process of falling. So rather than allowing our lives to be dictated by fear of the unknown, or trying to avoid falling, we can appreciate that sometimes we experience life fully when we are willing to trust and fall. And in doing so, we may just find that we have the wings to fly.

When we believe that there is a reason for everything, we are stepping out with the safety net of the universe, and we know we will make the best from whatever comes our way.

Winter Spring Summer Fall

What Season is YOUR Skin for Picking Wardrobe?

I work with a lot of young talented people and some of them just have no clue about what colors look best on their complexion!  Some are color blind.  When I was 19 a dear friend was doing some sort of class on color and she wrapped my face and determined that Spring colors were best for my wardrobe and on many multi able layers with in my life I've learned to think a bit more about others and what would look best on them for gifting based on skin tones. It s a natural process for me now but maybe this will help some of you photographers to think about sets and styling in regards to skin tone and season.
Home Depo has a color swatch system as well for blending colors together when your painting rooms in your home or in sets.

Whose Got The BLUES ?
Ryan at his favorite Cigar Bar in Santa Fe NM

R Y A N  M C G A R V E Y
Five years ago, maybe more...I heard some serious blues guitar riffs, coming out of a local bar off of Rt 66.
I was in photographic show that night and me and my pals were strolling to grab a bite.
We stopped and were mesmerized.  Who is that guy?  Wow what a player I thought so we pulled up a table and ordered.
This was a local kid at the time, tall dark and handsome is putting it lightly.
Something about the musical types charms most anyone!
Having been around many talented folks throughout my career I have often connected many players to A&R folks, producers, magazines and other connections.  Bands like the Spin Doctors and Chris Whitley are just a few.
Ryan is what I call a NATURAL.
Mind you he works really hard, like a virtuoso always practicing, his finger skills are that of an Olympic athlete.
He packs audiences and has a pretty huge fan base for a man based out of New Mexico.
He's now doing gigs in Europe as well and I can imagine him touring Japan.
Check out his music.  Here's a few pics I took while teaching a one on one workshop this weekend.
I would love to take him on a road trip in the south photographing jute box joints.
He would be our ticket in and my images and her words could be a really interesting project.

I think Video may have to be in tow...anyone want to donate that camera for this project?

Stacey Kay Neff

Art Goddess
Stacey Neff was introduced to by Erika Wanemaker, another great female artist here in New Mexico.  Lots of great women making great strides to create substantial works of art.  Stacey is the CEO of the Experimental glass Workshop.  She has a huge set up in her space and is in go mode more than not.  She's a wife, artist, and mother of three. Plus one 145lb Mastiff pup.
I was teaching a workshop and asked her to be my demo subject.
I do believe the rather heavy glass balls she makes was derived from bubble bathing!
Soap up your hand and thumb to pointer make a circle and blow.
We shared some mommy stories.
Making images with Stacey was easy, tons of spaces and creative essence of hers with in her work space.
She's a "TOOL GIRL"
Some women want vacations, rings, cars and feminine things...
I can relate to Stacey, she wants a band saw, rather large might I add and machines that help her manifest her art dreams.
One of many tools in Stacey's world, you might say she's got a FULL TOOL BOX
